IT could be the final warm day of the year as temperatures peak today before plummeting throughout the rest of the week.

Forecasters predict the mercury will stay at a balmy 17C in Glasgow - matching the warmth of yesterday.

But from Tuesday the temperatures is set to fall with heavy rain expected throughout the week.

Forecaster Andy Ratcliffe, from Meteogroup, the weather arm of the Press Association, said: "Glasgow enjoyed highs of 17C yesterday with sunshine and clear skies.

"Today we're expecting similar temperatures but there is going to be a lot more cloud cover.

"It will be a good idea to make the most of today's weather as we are not going to see similar warmth during the rest of the week.

"As we go further into the week we will we see more cloud, a drop in temperatures and we will see it start to become more unsettled and at times heavy rain will fall."

On Sunday the temperatures in Scotland reached a high of 20C in Achnagart in Inverness-shire.

The top temperature again today is expected in the same area but the rest of the country will enjoy warm weather.

In Glasgow the mercury will again hit 17C, despite cloudy skies.

But the short spell of good weather is to be just a gap in the clouds until Tuesday when wet weather is set to hit the country with heavy rain predicted in Glasgow and the west.

Mr Ratcliffe added: "The temperature is quite a bit above the seasonal average this year but it's not unusual for the north west of Scotland to enjoy the highest temperatures for the country."

Wet weather is predicted for the rest of the week with showers and heavy rain continuing all the way through until the weekend.
