THERE are too many student flats in the West End of Glasgow, a government minister has been told.

Sandra White, the Kelvin SNP MSP, asked Housing Minister Margaret Burgess what action the Scottish Government was taking to protect communities from over provision of student housing.

Ms White's constituency covers all three of the city's universities and many colleges and covers several dedicated student blocks.

She asked for Ms Burgess to meet with community council members to discuss the problems.

MS White said: "In my constituency, some areas are in danger of losing what are age old communities and in danger of becoming student villages."

Ms Burgess said it was primarily a matter for the local council to deal with through their planning and housing policies but she understood there were concerns. She said she was happy to meet with Ms White to discuss the issue.
