MUSLIMS across Glasgow and the world are set to celebrate Eid one week from today - and the entire city is invited to join in the big food fest.

Eid al-Fitr, as it is more formally known, is the day-long celebration marking the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting.

For Muslims, this is one of the most significant dates on the calendar, and is marked by performing a special Eid prayer, exchanging gifts, and - more importantly - gathering with friends and loved ones to share a feast.

Much like Easter Sunday in the Christian calendar, Eid does not fall on the same day every year.

Instead, Eid and the period of Ramadan are both dictated by a new moon, as Islam follows the lunar calendar.

Restaurants across Glasgow will be offering deals to hungry customers - regardless of background - and other events will be taking place in the lead up to the big day.

One of the city’s Indian street food specialists, Tuk Tuk, is hosting Glasgow’s only potluck celebration of Eid with a specially created menu and Bollywood dance classes.

The Sauchiehall Street eatery’s dinner will take place on June 14 with guests able to enjoy a special set menu for just £12.

The Bollywood dance workshops are run by Nak-Shatra Dance and Events and will take place from 5pm to 7pm and should be booked in advance.

All ticket holders will receive a choice of meat or vegetarian set menus, with vegan alternatives available on request, and plenty of lamb, chicken, biryani and tantalising sides will be flying out of the kitchen.

Guests are also allowed to bring their own drinks with them, free of charge.

Owner Rizvi Khaleque spoke of his excitement ahead of the big day, and said: “I love Eid and I’m excited to be able to share our potluck meal with the people of Glasgow.

“We would love people to experience some Eid-inspired dishes, Tuk Tuk style.

“Since opening in Glasgow, we’ve been delighted by the welcome we’ve received and are confident the city is well placed to celebrate Eid in this way.”

Tickets for both the dinner and dance classes are now on sale via eventbrite.co.uk.

The day will include a wide range of activities, including a funfair with plenty of thrilling rides, a souk zone from where you can pick up gifts, a foods-from-around-the-world area, children’s zone with sports, crafts, entertainment, games and face painting as well as plenty of ice-cream which will be a relief if the weather turns warm.

Tickets for Eid in the Park are just £3.28, with booking fee, from eventbrite.co.uk.

Many mosques across the city and beyond will be throwing open their doors to non-Muslims, agnostics and those of another faith should they wish to take part in the celebrations.
