HUNDREDS of mourners paid tribute to rally tragedy victim Len Stern at an emotional funeral service yesterday.

Family and friends gathered at Clydebank Crematorium to say their final farewells to the 71-year-old Bearsden local who was one of three spectators killed when a car came off the road at the Jim Clark Rally in the Scottish Borders on May 31.

About 250 competitors were taking part in the rally, one of the largest in the UK, when a car ploughed into spectators.

Mr Stern's family said he died "watching the sport he loved" and he was "a special uncle who was well-loved by his family".

As reported in later editions of last night's Evening Times, the service was conducted by the Rev Graeme Wilson of Bearsden Cross Church.

On top of the coffin was a family wreath of white lilies and carnations alongside a blue and white wreath in the shape of a VW.

A statement from Mr Stern's family said: "His death is really tragic but he died watching the sport that he loved. Our thoughts are with the driver and his family during this difficult time."

The other victims, Iain Provan, 64, and his partner Elizabeth Allan, 63, had travelled to the event from Barrhead, near Glasgow.

Mrs Allan's funeral is being held today at Craigton Crematorium. Relatives described her as a "beloved daughter and loving sister".

In a statement they said: "Betty was a caring and loving daughter, sister, auntie and great aunt and will be missed immensely."

Mr Provan's funeral will take place at Woodside Crematorium in Paisley today at noon.

Mr Provan's family also released a statement thanking race officials, members of the public and the emergency services for their help after the tragedy.
