TRIBUTES have been paid to a former North Lanarkshire councillor who died suddenly on Monday.

Gerry McLaughlin, 80, served on Motherwell and North Lanarkshire councils for 21 years, as housing convener for both.

North Lanarkshire council leader Jim McCabe said he was 'totally committed' to his duties as a councillor and "gave nothing but the best of advice."

He said: "He was a committed family man, took his local government duties seriously and was a personal friend.

"He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and I extend my deepest sympathies to Kathleen and the family."

Chief executive Gavin Whitefield, added: "I am privileged to have worked with Gerry McLaughlin at Motherwell District Council and North Lanarkshire Council as Director of Housing.

"Gerry had a passion for housing and was a real community leader, which was particularly demonstrated in the regeneration of Muirhouse in his ward. This was just one example of his many achievements in his 21 years as a councillor and my thoughts are very much with his family and friends at this sad time."

David Stocks, leader of the minority group, also paid tribute.

He said he had known Gerry since he was elected in 1995.

He said: "I knew him well during our time with North Lanarkshire Council. And over the years he would always be there for good advice and was dedicated to serving his local community.

"We're all saddened to hear of Gerry's passing and the SNP group sends its condolences to his family at this time."

His funeral will take place at St Brendan's, in Muirhouse, at 11am on Friday followed by burial at Airbles Cemetery, Motherwell.
