HUNDREDS of mourners gathered to remember a young man who drowned in a canal.

The family and friends of Kristopher Boyle visited the site of his death on Wednesday, on what would have been his 25th birthday.

Kristopher was found in the canal at Spiers Wharf last August, prompting a police probe into the circumstances surrounding his death.

His younger brother Harry,13, and Courtney,15, wanted to organise the tribute to remember their brother.

Heartbroken mum Kim said it was their way of coping after the terrible tragedy.

Bali Sandhu, Kristopher's aunt, was one of the mourners at the ceremony on Wednesday.

She said: "The atmosphere was good, it was a really good turnout but it was quite emotional too.

"We all set off lanterns and balloons, some people read poems and things like that they had written for him.

"We all sang happy birthday to Kristopher too, people came up with candles. Lots of people came and went over the course of the night."

Despite extensive police investigations into the accident, no more information about the case has been released.

Police said inquiries are still ongoing into the popular lad's death.

Another of Kristopher's friends was also found in the same sport three years earlier.

Stuart Davis, 23, was found in the body of water in 2011.

Following the 23 and 24-year-olds' deaths, friends started a campaign to improve safety around the canal.

They launched a petition and called for life rings and ladders to be installed at the site where the pair drowned, and were backed by MSP Sandra White.

It is understood extra lighting has been put in around some areas of the water network.
