Joe Leitch, 79, died after the accident in Main Street, Udding-ston, South Lanark-shire, on Monday.
In a statement, Mr Leitch's family paid tribute to the father of three and grandfather of seven, saying: "Joe was a devoted husband to Cathie, and nursed her through the many years of her illness.
"A real character, he had a great sense of humour and his stories of growing up in Maryhill, and of his years of National Service, in industry and in education would keep his family and friends laughing for hours.
"He leaves behind three daughters, seven grandchildren and many friends all of whom love him and will miss him greatly."
Mr Leitch was a retired college lecturer who had lived in Uddingston for many years. He had lived in nearby Bothwell for the last three years.
Prior to his retirement he taught maths at Coatbridge College and did voluntary tutoring in maths.
His family added: "He was a keen golfer and a member of Bothwell Golf Club. He and his late wife Cathie were members of Uddingston Baptist Church."
