A FURTHER two cases of Legionnaires' Disease linked to the Renfrew area have been confirmed – bringing the total number to eight.

Both of the current victims are responding well to treatment at home and all the previously reported cases are now fully recovered.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde' is continuing to work closely with other public bodies to identify the source of the infection.

All confirmed cases have had some direct or indirect link to the Renfrew area.

All active water cooling towers have been treated with chemicals that kill the legionella bacteria as a precautionary measure and a number of towers have been sampled for the bacteria.

Dr Gillian Penrice, NHSGGC Consultant in Public Health, said: "We have notified all GPs and frontline hospital teams to keep this outbreak uppermost in their minds when dealing with patients displaying symptoms of headache, fever, dry cough, breathing difficulties, stomach pains and diarrhoea.

"Anyone currently displaying these symptoms should contact NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24 or their own GP."

Legionella bacteria is spread through aerosols produced from water, such as water cooling towers, air conditioning units and showers.

The symptoms and signs of Legionnaires' Disease include headache, fever, dry cough, breathing difficulties, stomach pains and diarrhoea.
