A MAN was airlifted to hospital after his car was involved in a crash with a lorry.

Firefighters used specialist hydraulic cutting equipment to rescue the drivers of both vehicles following the crash on the A70 at Coylton in South Ayrshire.

It happened at around 3.30pm on Monday.

After being freed from the car, the driver was taken to the Southern General in Glasgow.

The lorry driver was also taken to hospital by ambulance.

Group Manager Jim McNeil, the incident commander, said: "This was a very serious collision that resulted in both drivers being trapped and sustaining significant injuries.

"Rescue operations were conducted at both vehicles simultaneously, with our crews working alongside paramedics and a doctor.

"Everyone involved did an outstanding job under difficult circumstances.

"The force of the impact had knocked the front wheel off the LGV and this was actually underneath it's rear axle - it was in an unstable position ready to roll over."
