A new era in train travel in Scotland was ushered in at a red-carpet event at Stirling rail station today.

The new ScotRail franchise was launched by Jeff Hoogesteger, chief executive officer of Dutch operator Abellio Group, and Derek Mackay MSP, Minister for Transport.

Abellio today took over the franchise from First Group, and celebrated with a £1 million free off-peak ticket giveaway.

It also announced plans for brand-new trains between Glasgow and Edinburgh, a high-quality intercity fleet serving Scotland's seven cities, a Scottish nationwide smartcard and a £1m community engagement programme.

"Today begins a new chapter in the long story of Scotland's railways," Mr Hoogesteger told a crowded media conference at Stirling station.

"As the new stewards of a vital part of Scotland's society and economy, we understand the responsibility we assume today. We will work very hard every day to earn the faith that has been shown in us."

He said ScotRail was no longer just a train operating company "but a true passenger-focused company."

Under Abellio, ScotRail would play "a truly strategic role in the long-term development of Scotland."

The combination of Abellio and ScotRail "will move the business from good to great," he added.

He raised smiles when he said he was "not Harry Potter, who is a valued customer of our railways" and that the transformation would not magically happen overnight.

Abellio UK managing director Dominic Booth said: "The ScotRail team are handing over a franchise in very good shape and we are grateful.

"However, we are determined that ScotRail will now go beyond A-to-B and play a truly strategic role in the long-term success of the country."

At 11.11am, Mr Hoogesteger and Mr Mackay waved off the inaugural train, to Aberdeen.

A train carrying some guests to today's event from Glasgow was delayed by around 10 minutes.
