Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow airports all reported increases of more than 4% in the number of people through their doors, when compared to the figures for the same month in 2013.

Aberdeen enjoyed the biggest growth in passenger numbers in percentage terms. It reported a rise of 8.2% last month to 289,193 passengers.

Scotland's busiest airport, Edinburgh, had a 4.9% increase in March passenger numbers compared to last year. More than 730,000 passengers travelled through the airport last month, with the figures showing increases in domestic and international passenger numbers.

Passenger growth at Glasgow Airport also continued with almost 532,000 people travelling through it last month, representing an increase of 4.1% compared to the same period last year.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: "April signalled the start of our busy summer schedule and with our preparations for the Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup well under way, passengers will start to notice changes in our main terminal building which has been undergoing an extensive refurbishment."

Aberdeen Airport managing director Carol Benzie said they are pressing ahead with work on terminal redevelopment and have seen two new air services take off in the last month.

Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: "We enjoyed a busy March with good performances from domestic and international carriers. We also experienced our busiest departure day ever thanks to the thousands of French rugby fans leaving Edinburgh after the Six Nations."
