TENNIS ace Andy Murray will play a world tie at the Emirates Arena as the Glasgow venue hosts the Davis Cup.

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has announced the upcoming Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group tie between Great Britain and the United States will take place at the Commonwealth venue.

The first round tie will take place from March 6 to 8 next year, with the tennis star calling the development "a massive deal".

World number 6 Andy said: "I'm really excited about coming to Glasgow to play in a World Group tie.

"It's going to be a huge week for our team and I'm looking forward to be able to play in front a home crowd.

"I did play Davis Cup in Glasgow a few years ago where we received incredible support, but this is a World Group tie so it's a massive deal and we'll be doing everything we can to get the win."

The Emirates Arena will see a temporary tennis court built with a 7,100 capacity and the teams will be announced no later than ten days before the start of the tie.

The Great Britain versus United States rivalry is the oldest in Davis Cup history, dating back to the very first competition which took place in 1900.

The two nations last played each other on British soil in the 1999 World Group first round, and the USA lead the current head to head by 11-8.

Leon Smith, Captain of the Aegon GB Davis Cup Team, said: "We've had absolutely brilliant experiences of playing in Glasgow during recent ties and the crowd always creates an unbelievable atmosphere. "It's going to be a huge deal with Andy heading back to play in Scotland for the first time since he won Wimbledon last year.

"It will no doubt be an emotional experience for all of us, just like it was when Andy came back to Glasgow and played against Luxembourg in 2011.

"You could see how much the crowd were desperate to see him play and we're delighted to now be in a position to bring a World Group tie to a city that has given us so much support over the years."

Tickets will go on general sale from Tuesday, November 25.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "The prospect of Andy Murray and the British team taking on the best players from the USA at the Emirates Arena is truly one to relish.

"This is fantastic news and bringing Davis Cup tennis to the Emirates Arena continues our success in attracting world-class sporting events to the city.

"With the FIG World Gymnastics Championships, IPC World Swimming Championships and now Davis Cup tennis in Glasgow in 2015, we will continue to merit our position as one of the world's top ten sporting cities."

This is Great Britain's second straight year in the World Group after the team maintained their position within the world's elite by making the quarter-finals in 2014.

Great Britain upset the Americans in San Diego with a 3-1 victory in this year's first round and will be hoping to replicate that performance on home soil.
