At around 10pm on Thursday night, a 20-year-old man was attacked when walking on Laburnam Road, Uddingston.
Three men in a small, silver, three-door car got out of the vehicle and seriously assaulted him in an unprovoked attack.
The suspects then which continued to drive along Laburnum Road.
A few moments later, a passing taxi driver stopped when he saw the victim on the ground and contacted emergency services.
The man was taken to Monkland's District General Hospital where he was treated for serious facial injuries and then later released.
The victim was not able to get a good look at the suspects, and can only describe one man as being white, Scottish around 40 years old, bald with a heavy build.
Officers from Wishaw are appealling for any witnesses or anyone with any information.
Detective Constable Mark Cummings said: "We are carrying out extensive inquiries and checking all CCTV in an effort to trace the men responsible for this assault.
"Anyone who was on Laburnum Road around 10pm on Thursday night and saw this assault or a small silver car with three men inside is asked to contact Police Scotland via 101.
"Alternatively, contact CRIMESTOPPERS in confidence on 0800 555 111."
