Pupils from Bearsden Academy were the first to get their hands on pioneering fully polymer banknotes, ahead of the launch of the new £5 note today.

The banknote is being introduced by Clydesdale Bank to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the opening of the Forth Bridge and pupils from the Bearsden Academy branch of Young Engineers and Science Clubs Scotland (YESC) were enlisted to put it to the test.

Under the guidance of YESC ambassador Heather Reid, the pupils recreated a number of tests which the notes underwent, including a stress test and a 'rubbing test' to replicate the conditions a note endures throughout its lifetime.

The limited edition note features images of the Forth Bridge along with a portrait of prominent Scottish engineer Sir William Arrol, whose company was responsible for the construction of the bridge.

Debbie Crosbie, acting CEO of Clydesdale Bank, said: "Being able to involve the next generation of Scottish engineers with the launch has been particularly pleasing. Hopefully some of the children present will go on to play their part in developing future engineering and scientific innovations."

The new notes will be available from Scottish Clydesdale Bank branches from today.
