The 16-year-old was expected to appear at Airdrie Sheriff Court today after two other boys were admitted to hospital after taking suspected Mortal Kombat ecstasy tablets.

The Crown Office confirmed that the 16-year-old has been freed pending further enquiries.

Two boys - one 16 and one 17 - were taken to hospital on Saturday with police saying they took drugs including ecstasy and possibly a Mortal Kombat tablet at a party in Coatbridge.

The 16-year-old is in intensive care at Monklands General Hospital in Airdrie, while the 17-year-old has been discharged.

A Crown Office spokesman said: "The procurator fiscal at Airdrie has received a report relating to an alleged incident involving a 16-year-old male in Coatbridge on 8 March.

"Following full and careful consideration, the accused was liberated from custody pending further enquiries and did not appear in court".

Mortal Kombat pills were though to be a factor in the death of 17-year-old Clydebank girl Regane MacColl, who took ill while on a night out at The Arches nightclub in Glasgow.

She later died in hospital.
