PASSENGERS had to be evacuated from a busy commuter bus in Glasgow today after smoke engulfed its engine.

The incident occurred in Commerce Street, near the city centre, before 8am today.

Dense smoke billowed out of the engine as around a dozen passengers and a driver had to flee the No 38 City Sprinter.

It caused chaos for commuters making their way into the city centre.

Passengers were evacuated after the driver raised the alarm at around 7.40am today.

Witnesses reported seeing plumes of smoke from the vehicle as well as a "burning smell".

The smoke was a major safety concern for drivers as it engulfed the busy road.

A City Sprinter spokesman said: “The bus broke down and recovery was sent out.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
