A CAR at the centre of a brutal murder could be the key to catching the killer.

Detectives probing the death of Arthur Green, who was battered to death in his own home, are now following a positive line of inquiry.

But officers have urged anyone who saw a medium sized silver or light coloured car in Prestwick on the night of the killing to come forward.

A relative found 's body, which had lain undiscovered for almost 10 hours.

The 60-year-old was murdered at the property in Pleasantfield Road, Prestwick, overnight between last Wednesday and Thursday.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Boyd, of the Major Investigation Team, said: "Arthur was a frail man who needed a walking stick to get around.

"He was well known in the local community and I would like to thank those who have made contact with police following the first appeal.

"I am particularly interested to hear from anyone who has seen a medium sized silver or light coloured car which we believe had more than one occupant.

"It may have been parked in the Pleasantfield Road or Oswald Road area late on Wednesday evening.

"I am keen to speak to the occupants of this vehicle or anyone who may have seen or has knowledge of this vehicle."

Mr Green was last seen alive at around 10.30pm on Wednesday November 19.

At around 8.10am the following morning, a family member made the grim discovery when he found Mr Green's battered body.

Extra police patrols have been drafted into the area to reassure worried locals after the murder.

A police source said Mr Green suffered serious injuries to his chest and abdomen - but was not stabbed.

It is understood Mr Green, who lived alone, only recently moved into the house in the quiet seaside town.

DCI Boyd added: "We would ask that anyone who was nearby, or who may know someone who was, to come forward with any information.

"We can also now say that police are following a positive line of inquiry at this time."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Major Incident Room at Govan on 101.
