A controversial nightclub is facing an uncertain future after 26 clubbers were arrested for alleged drugs and booze offences.

Police slapped The Arches with the "sin bin" closure after a popular dance event descended into drunken chaos.

Today the Evening Times can reveal club bosses are set to be summoned to appear before licensing chiefs following a string of incidents.

Sanctions open to the board could include shutting the venue, while its hours could also be curtailed.

It comes after a woman collapsed and was rushed to hospital, as the club hosted a GBX Anthems set by Radio Clyde DJ George Bowie, early on Sunday.

The 30-year-old collapsed outside The Arches, which was last year linked to the death of an underage schoolgirl, at around 12.40am.

The Evening Times understands the club's licence will be reviewed before it re-opens this weekend.

Supt Alan Murray who heads up the Greater Glasgow Licensing department said: "We have responded following a number of concerning incidents over the past two weeks and I am entirely satisfied the closure was necessary and proportionate to protect the mainly young revellers who attend this venue.

"We have served an emergency closure notice on the premises under the Licensing Scotland Act 2005 and will be submitting a report to Glasgow City Council Licensing Board requesting a review of the circumstances and consideration of what further action is required."

Chief Inspector Mark Sutherland, Area Commander for Glasgow City Centre added: "Glasgow City Police recorded 26 offences for drug- and alcohol-related incidents at or outside this venue on Saturday night which is completely unacceptable."

Police previously ordered a review of the club after Regane MacColl's death in February last year and its licence was at risk.

However, the club kept its licence after bosses said they has acted on the police's recommendations, including a strict over-21s policy. Club bosses soon re-instated an over-18s rule instead.

Regane, 17, from Clydebank collapsed in the club and laterdied in hospital.

Arches spokeswoman Georgia Riungu said: "The Arches can confirm that, in consultation with Police Scotland on the night, Saturday's GBX club was closed earlier than advertised.

"We cannot comment further until a full review of the circumstances has taken place."
