Robert Finlayson, 22, of Hamilton, was discovered on the B7078 Lesmahagow to Canderside Toll road in South Lanarkshire at around 4.35am yesterday.
The body was removed and taken to Glasgow's Southern General Hospital and a post mortem examination is expected to take place later today. The road was closed off for several hours while inquiries were carried out and reopened around 4pm. Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Inspector Calum Maider of Road Policing, said: "Inquiries are ongoing to establish what occurred however we believe that he may have been struck by a motor vehicle."
