A member of the public discovered the female jack russell terrier wandering in a dreadful state in the Townhead area on Saturday, April 26 and handed her into the Scottish SPCA's Lanarkshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Hamilton.

The dog, estimated to be under a year old, has been named Lulu by staff and is responding well to treatment.

Inspector Gillian Dick said, "Lulu is suffering from chronic dermatitis on her face and body.

"When she first arrived her skin was raw and bleeding from where she had been scratching to try and relieve the severe itch and the dermatitis has also resulted in significant hair-loss "Lulu would have been in extreme pain and discomfort and we're very glad she was found so we could give her the help she needs.

"At this stage we don't know whether Lulu has strayed from home or been abandoned but we are treating this as a case of neglect as we believe her owner has not sought the veterinary treatment she desperately required.

"We're urging anyone who recognises Lulu and knows who may have owned her to contact us as soon as possible.

"Lulu is responding well to medication and has already been offered a loving home by a lady who was visiting the centre when she was handed in.

"We're hopeful Lulu will make a good recovery and will soon be able to start afresh with her new owner."

Anyone with information is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
