On Glasgow's Buchanan Street, Christmas songs are blasting from shops.
Just one street away, in the city's busy centre, emergency services are fighting to save the lives of pedestrians hit by a bin lorry that went out of control.
Minutes after the accident happened, security staff from George Square, police and ambulance crews arrived on the scene.
I saw at least one dead body covered with a blanket on Queen Street and another woman lying on the crossroads of George Square and Queen St receiving CPR. She appears to have died at the scene.
People were screaming, others in tears.
"It all happened so quickly," said one man. "The bin lorry driver just lost control. His head was nodding."
