The funeral of Scotland, Hearts and Tottenham Hotspur legend Dave Mackay takes place today following a cortege from his old Edinburgh club's ground.

Dave Mackay, who died aged 80 earlier this month, is to be remembered at a service in Mansfield Traquair Church in the Scottish capital.

A spokesman for Hearts said a number of the UK's football greats are expected to attend.

The spokesman said: "Some of the greats of British football will be in attendance and this is testament to the highest regard in which Dave was held.

"We would like to notify all fans that the funeral cortege for Dave's last journey will leave Tynecastle Stadium at 1.15pm.

"Travelling down Gorgie Road and Dalry Road, the cortege will go past the Heart of Midlothian War Memorial at Haymarket and along West Maitland Street and Shandwick Place before proceeding along Princes Street, down Leith Street and lastly, down Broughton Street to Mansfield Traquair.

"We would urge any fans in the area to line Gorgie Road and Dalry Road, in particular, but not to come to Tynecastle itself as McLeod Street will be closed off from early morning.

"After the memorial service in Mansfield Traquair, the family will have a private service at Warriston Crematorium and we would thank all fans in advance for respecting the privacy of this part of the day."

Mackay, who was born in Edinburgh, enjoyed a glittering sporting career, winning 22 caps for Scotland and playing in the 1958 World Cup.

He was playing for Hearts when they lifted the Scottish Cup and after he was signed by Tottenham Hotspur, for £32,000, they became the first English club in the 20th century to win the league and cup double.

In an interview with The Herald and Evening Times 10 years ago, Mackay cited winning the league with Hearts in 1958 as "even better" than the landmark achievements with Tottenham in 1961.

He said: "I was a Jambos fan from when I was a little boy."

Supporters movement Foundation of Hearts said earlier that "the Hearts family has lost a true giant".
