A 32-year-old man has been seriously injured after a man struck him on the head with a large weapon in Kilmarnock.

The victim was walking on a footpath close to Onthank Primark and Tourhill Road around 2am on Saturday when he was approached by another man who struck him on the head with a large weapon.

The victim managed to make his way home and he was later admitted to Crosshouse Hospital for treatment to a serious head injury.

He was later transferred to the Southern General where he is currently detained.

Detectives are appealing directly to the public and the local community for their assistance in the enquiry.

Detective Inspector Ricky Drummond, of Kilmarnock CID, said: "This was a very frightening experience for the man who sustained a significant head injury in this attack.

"We've yet to speak to the victim at length therefore we have scant information at this time, however, I'd like to speak to any local people or anyone who was nearby who may have seen or heard a disturbance in the area where the attack took place.

"We're continuing door to door enquiries and are checking all CCTV that may be available to see if that can assist us.

"We have had some information from the public however I am confident that there may be some witnesses who have not yet come forward.

"I'd like to speak to those people, as they may be able to help with our enquiry. "

Anyone with information is asked to contact Kilmarnock CID on 101.
