More than £13,000 of donations have been pledged to a foodbank after it was robbed by heartless thieves.

Dozens of kind-hearted people have given more than £8000 to the Greater Maryhill foodbank while First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has approved a donation of £5000 from the Scottish Government.

As reported in the Evening Times, the Greater Maryhill Foodbank was raided over the weekend.

The callous raiders made off with £1300 raised to help young Chelsea Somerville, who was injured in a hit-and-run accident in November on nearby Sandbank Street.

They also stole £3000 worth of supermarket vouchers, clothes and an iPad after entering the storage unit on Chapel Street.

Thieves made a hole in the roof, and broke into the locked office before opening a safe and taking the cash and vouchers.

Glasgow comedian Frankie Boyle donated a cheque for £5000 while others gave anonymous donations, and smaller amounts of cash.

Donations of extra food and clothes have also been handed in.

Thompsons Solicitors spotted the story after it was reported in the Evening Times, and immediately offered to help with a £500 donation.

Organiser Julie Webster said she was "overwhelmed" by the number of donations and offers of help which have been pouring in.

She said: "There have been people in tears and crying, especially kids who don't understand why somebody would do this to the foodbank.

"The support has been absolutely unbelievable. I've lost count of the amount of things we've been given.

"We got a beautiful gesture from Frankie Boyle which will help massively, but it makes no difference what the amount is. The fact that people want to give £1 or £20 makes no difference, we've all built this together.

"People have been coming crying with bags of food and money, allsorts. The volume of that is immeasurable. I live in an outstanding community and I'm not surprised as I know what they are like.

"We all help each other out in times of need.

"Running a project like this your breath is taken away every day, and the public have been absolutely fantastic like I expected they would be."

Patrick McGuire, a partner with Thompsons Solicitors, said: "What happened to the foodbank is absolutely awful.

"I don't understand how anyone could do such a callous thing to some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

"Thompsons will always try and help in situations like this so we've been in touch with Julie who runs the foodbank to let her know that Thompsons are going to make a contribution to help Chelsea and her family."

Despite the surge in donations and cash for the organisation Julie still issued a stark warning to the robbers.

She said: "There will still be no forgiveness from me towards the person who has done this.

"I hope they know there will be people starving because of their actions.

"You will be found and I hope no goodness comes out of the money and the vouchers you have.

"You've taken the food out of children's mouths and the clothes from their back."
