More than £1.5million of drugs seized

DRUGS worth more than £1.5millon have been seized during two police operations in Glasgow and Lanarkshire.

Officers swooped on an industrial unit in Balmoral Street, Partick and discovered around 1100 cannabis plants.

The intelligence-led operation took place at around 8.45pm on Thursday.

Officers said the cannabis had an estimated street value of £660,000.

Detectives said inquiries are ongoing to trace those involved in the cultivation.

Around an hour earlier, officers stopped a car on the M74, which was travelling northbound at Larkhall and recovered a quantity of drugs.

The drugs, believed to be Amphetamine Sulphate, has an estimated street value of £1m.

Detective Chief Inspector Kevin Jamieson Organised Crime and Counter Terrorism Unit, said: "We remain dedicated to working pro-actively to rid our communities of drugs, and will take swift action on any information passed to us.

"We are always grateful for any assistance and support from the public."

A 26-year-old man was arrested, and is currently detained in police custody, in connection with the M74 recovery.

He is expected to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Monday.

Police said a full report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Detective Inspector Alasdair Anderson, of Greater Glasgow Division, said: "When premises are used for cannabis cultivations they pose a potentially lethal fire risk.

"I would urge all landlords of both residential and commercial properties to, if possible, keep an eye on them and report anything suspicious to police."
