Newsquest has bought the Romanes Media Group for an undisclosed sum.
Romanes has a portfolio of newspaper titles with the bulk of its operations in Scotland although it also has a presence in Berkshire and Northern Ireland.
The group, which can trace its roots back to the 19th century and the formation of the Dunfermline Press, employs around 270 people.
It also owns the Greenock Telegraph and the East Lothian Courier.
Newsquest, owner of The Herald, said the deal provided a good strategic fit for its business.
