DETECTIVES are hunting two thugs who stabbed a man in a brutal late-night attack.

The 32-year-old suffered serious injuries and was left for dead following the vicious assault, which police are treating as attempted murder.

He raised the alarm, after making his way to his friend's house, and contacted emergency services at around 8pm on Wednesday.

The victim is believed to have been walking along Mavis Road, near to Wren Road, in Greenock, when the two men attacked him.

He was rushed to the Inverclyde Royal Hospital, where he received treatment for stab wounds and a head injury.

Hospital staff described his condition as stable.

Detective Inspector David Wagstaff, from Greenock CID, said: "At this time we are unaware of the full circumstances of the attack and hope to speak to the injured man soon.

"But we need the help of the public to trace those responsible.

"At that time of night, there is a good chance someone in the surrounding area may have seen or heard the disturbance, or noticed anyone acting suspiciously.

"I would urge them to get in touch with us as soon as possible."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Greenock CID on 101.
