The Emirates Arena was awash with glitter as hundreds of cheerleaders strutted their stuff.

Music and cheers echoed round the £113million sporting venue over two days of competitions at the European Championships.

It was the first time that the event, which is one of the largest on the cheerleading calendar, had been held in the UK.

More than 1700 cheerleaders from 20 countries battled it out for titles over two age categories, junior and senior.

Performers ranged in age from 12 up to adults, and competed in small groups of up to five and full teams of up to 25.

Abbie Brown, 12, and Fiona McCallum, 15, from the Stepps-based Samantha Brisbane School of Dance, won the gold medal representing Scotland in the junior double jazz category.

Over a total of 18 categories, including senior and junior titles, teams from Spain, Finland, Norway, Germany, Austria, Ukraine and the Netherlands won first prize medals.

Tone Sparby, president of the European Cheer Union, said: "We have had very positive feedback from athletes and coaches, they loved the venue and they loved the city."
