Police are hunting the driver of a car which drove along a pavement at a group of school pupils.

The incident happened at Wednesday lunchtime in Rosevale Street, Dumfries, after the driver of the small dark blue car, described as being like a Toyora Auris, had previously exchanged words with the group outside a nearby Spar shop.

The group of seven 14-year-olds from St Joseph's College were on the pavement when the car drove towards them before pulling off and driving away at speed.

Constable Stephen Easthill, school liaison officer for St Joseph's, said: "Thankfully no-one was injured in this incident, however it could have been a catastrophe.

"I am appealing to anyone who can help us identify the driver of this vehicle to call us on 101, or indeed the driver himself to come forward to explain his actions."

The driver is described as being between 5ft 9ins and 6ft, thin, between 50 and 60 years of age, with short grey untidy hair and a local accent.

He was wearing dark rimmed glasses, a mid-length light coloured jacket and jeans.
