The butterfly and the pig at the corona will officially open its Southside doors on Friday.

The launch of the pub and restaurant coincides with the 10th anniversary of the popular The butterfly and the pig, Bath Street.

To celebrate and recognise this special event and major milestone, 10 lucky guests or groups visiting the new venue in Shawlands on Friday night are in for a treat.

Throughout the evening staff will be randomly giving away ten prizes. This includes a complimentary pint, round of drinks, meals, theatre tickets and money-off vouchers.

The bar and restaurant, which has taken over Shawlands' historic Corona pub, has been entirely revamped and sits at the heart of plans for a Cultural Quarter in the neighbourhood.

Southsiders can expect a family-friendly welcome and a chilled-out vibe, and on the food side there is everything from breakfast and afternoon tea to gourmet burgers and tender lamb dishes.

Evening entertainment will include live music, and the odd pub quiz. Speciality wines, beers and ales will also be available.

Owner Michele Pagliocca, who also owns The Shed, said: "It's an exciting time for us and for Shawlands itself, which is enjoying a resurgence and has had new life breathed into it thanks to the recent opening of a string of new shops, bars and restaurants.

"The future is looking bright for the area, with plans for a civic square at Shawlands Cross, and we are delighted to be right in the thick of all the positive developments."

Paul Banham, area manager at The butterfly and the pig, said: "The butterfly and the pig celebrates its tenth birthday this year and what better way to celebrate than welcoming this great addition to the family.

"People who have never been to The butterfly and the pig can expect a warm welcome, great food, DJs, live music, increasingly-popular high teas and afternoon teas.

"We are simply offering great variety and bringing a new vibe to Shawlands that will guarantee people a great day or night out."

Councillor Archie Graham added: "The butterfly and the pig's arrival to Shawlands is great news for the community and local economy. I expect it will play an important role in not only encouraging locals to stay in the area, but attracting visitors from further afield too.

"I look forward to seeing the building returned to its original condition and wish all involved much success."

The Corona building is listed and is steeped in history, and the fact that it has been given a new lease of life can only be good news for history buffs, and those who simply enjoy a good pint - with their dog at their feet, if they fancy - in homely surroundings.

There has been a pub on the prominent site at the corner of Langside Avenue for more than a century.

The £200,000 refurbishment, which includes restoring many of the Edwardian building's original features, has been carried out by Glasgow based firm Bridgewater Buildings.

Stewart Tennent, founder and director at Bridgewater Buildings, said: "We were delighted to be chosen for this exciting project. Having worked with Michele in the past I knew exactly what was needed to ensure the south side venue was returned to its former glory while maintaining The butterfly and the pig's quirky, shabby chic interior."

Turnaround for the venue has been tight with Stewart and his team working round the clock to complete the refurbishment in an astonishing 23 days.

When you head along to The Butterfly and the Pig at the Corona for your first lunch or cocktail, it is worth taking a minute to read the wall plaque explaining why there are hands carved above the entrance doors.

We won't ruin it for you - but it involves Mary Queen of Scots and the Battle of Langside.
