After a day touring the Welsh valleys, Welsh 400m hurdler and European champion Rhys Williams kicked off day two of the Queen's Baton Relay in Wales, the Royal Mint said.

The 20th Commonwealth Games will see thousands of athletes competing in 17 sports from hockey to lawn bowls across 11 days in Glasgow.

The Royal Mint has commemorated the event by releasing a special edition 50p piece, and today's baton relay heralds the start of production of around five million of the circulating version of the coin.

Shane Bissett, the Royal Mint's director of commemorative coin and bullion, said: "For over 1,000 years the Royal Mint has been producing British coins that have recorded the passing of history, documenting changes in monarchs, customs and national themes.

"We are thrilled to be able to show our support for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and have the opportunity to commemorate this historical event on both commemorative and circulating coinage."
