Scores of trains were affected on Friday following the discovery of a technical fault at Newton Lanark, South Lanarkshire.

Dozens of spectators and other travellers were seen waiting on platforms at Partick station after services were delayed or scrapped at around 8.20am.

Many were travelling into Glasgow Central to continue their journey to other parts of the city, including Tollcross.

Around 10 services were hit on the Lanark to Glasgow line, while service were affected between Glasgow and Edinburgh via Shotts.

Services were also hit between Glasgow to Milngavie, Dalmuir, Balloch and Helensburgh.

A spokesman from Network Rail said engineers were at the site to deal with the "points failure".

The points system directs trains onto different tracks.

The spokesman said workers had identified the issue and were replacing the faulty part.

He said he could not give an "exact timescale" of when the problem would be resolved but said it was hoped the service will return to normal by lunchtime.

It came after Network Rail vowed to do everything they could to keep passengers moving during the Games, following a signalling fault on Tuesday.

The spokesman said additional engineers were on duty during the Games to make sure problems were dealt with quickly.
