A CABBIE was robbed at knifepoint in Glasgow after driving his passenger almost 100 miles.

The thug got into the taxi in an English town yesterday afternoon, and asked to be driven to Glasgow city centre.

He paid almost £200 up front, but after the long distance journey, the 60-year-old driver was threatened and robbed of his takings.

The passenger threatened the driver and forced him to hand back the fare during the horrific armed attack.

It happened in the Broomielaw area at around 3.30pm yesterday.

Police are studying CCTV footage in a bid to identify the attacker who fled the scene on foot.

A spokesman said: "A 60-year-old taxi driver was robbed of a quantity of money after a long distance journey in Clyde Street at 3.30pm on Thursday.

Police inquiries are continuing."

The suspect is described as between 20 and 30-years-old and around 6ft tall.

He was wearing a black hooded top, black leather jacket, and blue jeans.

Police said he was last seen leaving the area on foot.

Earlier this year, we revealed undercover police were to be deployed to tail taxis in a bid to stop attacks on drivers.

Plain clothes officers were drafted in over fears that thieves are targeting cabbies late at night.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
