A Scotrail ticket examiner was verbally abused and threatened with violence by a man for no apparent reason on a commuter train during rush hour.

The 30-year-old woman was left extremely upset and shocked by the incident which happened between Westerton and Partick train stations yesterday at around 8.40am.

British Transport Police say the incident happened on the 07.59 Helensburgh Central to Airdrie service.

The suspect is described as being aged between 50 and 60 years, about 5'7" in height, stocky build and he had stubble on his face.

He was wearing a dark jacket and was carrying a rucksack.

British Transport Police Constable Gary Ketterer is appealing for witnesses to come forward.

He said: "Rail staff should be able to carry out their duties without encountering such despicable behaviour.

"Anyone who was on the train, which was extremely busy at the time, and has information regarding this unsavoury incident should contact BTP immediately."

A spokeswoman for ScotRail, added: "We do not tolerate any kind of abusive behaviour towards our staff, and we will work with BTP to ensure the offender is brought to justice."
