A WOMAN had to be freed from her car by firefighters after a motorway crash.

Police, fire and ambulance were called to the M73 in North Lanarkshire, at around 10am today(MON).

Firefighters had to use hydraulic cutting equipment to free the woman and she was taken to Hairmyres Hospital for treatment.

The incident took place between Junction 1 Maryville and Junction 2 Baillieston of the busy motorway.

Watch Commander Kath McQueen said: "We arrived to find a woman trapped and immediately began working to safely release her from the car.

"We removed the roof from the vehicle in order to create access for a rescue board before lifting the casualty to a waiting ambulance.

"After safely releasing the woman from the car, she moved to an ambulance and taken to Hairmyres Hospital."
