Glasgow Airport has achieved a world first in shopping.

The transport hub is to be the launchpad of a new retail concept never tried before at any other airport and, if successful, could trigger a new global shopping chain.

Planeshop is a new, permanent store which will exclusively showcase one brand, before replacing it with another several weeks later.

Customers will be able to buy a glass of Californian wine and co-owner Russ Miller said they will also be offered use of an Ipad to check-out their favourite sites or search the web for details of a store product that’s caught their eye.

The company behind planeshop is Los Angeles-based Vacant which introduced the world to “popup retailing” – shops opening for a short specific time before closing.

Mr Miller said planeshop is taking off in Glasgow’s former international departure lounge within the next few days and will employ five staff.

He added: “We are delighted to be a part of the exciting developments at Glasgow Airport. Our new innovative retail concept will provide passengers with a new experience every time they visit planeshop.”

“There’s a lot of exciting things going on in Glasgow. There are also exciting developments at the airport and we want to be part of it.”

The so called “permanent shop with a flexible concept” will take-off by showcasing goods produced by Californian sports company K-Swiss, best known for its range of tennis, running and training footwear.

The airport’s managing director Amanda McMillan said: “Planeshop is another exciting retail venture for us and I’m sure our passengers will be impressed with the cutting edge store design and the range on offer.”

Planeshop is the latest in a series of firsts. Tesco is opening it’s first airport shop at Glasgow three years after Greggs the bakers launched its first Scottish airport outlet while Glasgow’s McArthurGlen Collezioni airport mall will feature 11 new stores.
