PUPILS from a Glasgow secondary school have delved into the history of the First World War to present the story of a local hero for BBC Scotland.

The history sleuths from St Pauls High School in Pollok tracked down a relative of John Meikle, a former clerk at Nithsill station, who was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for single-handedly storming machine gun emplacements.

The pupils tell his story in an episode of World War One at Home, which airs tomorrow on three Radio Scotland programmes.

Nitshill Councillor David McDonald says the community is considering a memorial garden and naming a street after the war hero.

He said: "For a long time we have been without a memorial to John and there's been nothing to keep his story alive other than the high regard he was held in by local people."
