WASTE recycling company Viridor has won a two-year contract to "transform" North Lanarkshire's blue bin collection.

The firm will recycle around 30,000 tonnes of plastic, paper, card and cans each year from 130,000 homes and aims to boost recycling across the area.

Material collected, along with recycling from South Lanarkshire, Midlothian, Aberdeenshire and Highland will be treated and reused.

Viridor regional manager Steven Don said: "This latest partnership between Viridor and North Lanarkshire Council is great news,.

"Great news for the council and communities, both in relation to recycling and an associated package of community benefits including our flagship education partnership.

"This further develops our investment in North Lanarkshire - from our Bargeddie recycling hub and our regional HQ at Euro- Central, to our latest £25million investment in the UK's most advanced glass recycling facility at Newhouse.

"That investment will continue to position Lanarkshire as a prime location for green infrastructure."
