A COMMUNITY group supporting people with learning disabilities has been given the Royal seal of approval.

We Step Together (WEST) was presented with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) at a special event in the City Chambers.

The members were given the top award for their work in tackling isolation, loneliness and exclusion among adults with learning disabilities.

As the Evening Times reported in July, the Drumchapel-based group provides support, advice and opportunities for members to improve their skills, boost their confidence and share experiences.

Lord Provost Sadie Docherty in her role as Lord Lieutenant, presented the group with their award - a domed glass crystal - and certificate signed by the Queen.

The QAVS is the highest award given to local volunteer groups in recognition of the outstanding work they do in their communities. It is the equivalent of an MBE for volunteer groups.

Mrs Docherty said: "We Step Together is a remarkable group doing remarkable work for adults with learning disabilities in the community.

"Hundreds of people in Drumchapel are living more active, healthier lives thanks to the exceptional work and dedication of the volunteers."

As well as self-help activities the group also campaigns for changes to issues affecting people with learning disabil-ities and brings together different age groups as a way of improving understanding between generations.

Donald Hewitson, group support worker, said: "The majority of volunteers in the group are learning disabled themselves and they decide on the activities and campaigns they want us to help with.

"These range from literacy and numeracy classes to a thriving walking group and youth hostelling to awareness raising of the issues that affect them and their friends at decision making forums, such as Voices for Change and the Public Partnership Forum."

Mr Hewitson said the "commitment and dedication" of the group's 50 volunteers "never fails to amaze me".

There is still time to honour a Glasgow voluntary group for next year's awards before the deadline of September 30.
