BOSSES at the fire-hit Glasgow Hydro say it will be a week before they know if the under-construction entertainment venue will open on time.

A fire ripped through the roof of the £125million building at the weekend, placing a question- mark over scheduled performances by artists including Rod Stewart, Fleetwood Mac and Jessie J.

Investigations are under way into the cause of the blaze, which engul-fed a part of the domed roof at the venue on the banks of the River Clyde.

Around 40 firefighters were called to the scene on Saturday afternoon. They used high-reach appliances to tackle the fire, which was extinguished hours later. No-one was hurt.

Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre bosses said they cannot confirm whether the fire will delay the opening of the venue.

They also confirmed that it will be at least a week before it is known how much the fire will impact on the venue's completion date.

The 12,000 seat arena, sponsored by Scottish Hydro, had been scheduled to open on September 30, with four gigs by Rod Stewart.

Other entertainers scheduled to appear within a month of the opening are Fleetwood Mac, Andrea Bocelli, Depeche Mode, Peter Gabriel, the Proclaimers, Simple Minds and Jessie J.

SECC Chief Executive John Sharkey said the artists' promoters would be kept updated on developments.

He said: "We don't know if it's going to have an impact on the opening or not."

He also confirmed that source of the blaze "an area underneath the roof gutter" but that there was no official confirmation of the cause.

Staff from Lend Lease, the building's main contractors, were on site yesterday to undertake a structural assessment and an SECC spokeswoman said it would be "at least a week" before it is known what impact the fire will have on the completion date."

Scottish Fire & Rescue confirmed it was liaising with police in a probe into the cause of the blaze.

The UK's Health and Safety Executive is also looking into the incident.
