GLASGOW and the West of Scotland remained on a snow and ice alert today as forecasters predicted more severe weather in some areas.

The Met Office said the city could see up to 2cm (almost 1in) of snow, with 4cm in higher areas.

The severe weather alert also warned drivers to beware of ice.

Foecaster George Goodfellow said: "Over the next few days there will not be an awful lot of change – we are still looking at cold easterly winds and cloud.

"In Glasgow there is still a chance of snow showers. Lying show could thaw and then refreeze, which would mean a risk of icy roads and fairly hazardous conditions."

The Met Office said temperatures could remain well below average throughout April.

Meanwhile, more people in the area worst affected by recent snowstorms have had power restored to their homes.

All but 450 homes on Arran and Kintyre were expected to be reconnected to electricity grids by last night after being cut off during Friday's storm.

Scottish and Southern Energy engineers have set up two temporary power stations to reconnect supplies while repairs were made to the network.

The firm said it hoped to have all affected homes on temporary supplies by the end of tonight.

The areas suffered severe weather, when two transmission pylons were toppled by ice and snow, which cut the power to around 18,000 properties.
