A STUDENT events team from Cumbernauld College has taken the top title at a prestigious nat-ional awards ceremony.

The Scottish Events Awards saw four students from the college land the student category prize.

JusTechnique, and its HNC Events students Mark Kerr, Jonathan Scullion, Samantha Shepherd and Margaret McEwan, were selected for the accolade after the success of their show choir competition involving local primary schools.

The group attended the event at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow and rubbed shoulders with high-profile entrants including the organisers of Rockness and Celtic Connections.

Margaret, of Cumbernauld, said: "It was amazing just to be able to attend the Scottish Events Awards but to be announced the winner of the student category was unbelievable.

"We were honoured to compete at this prestigious event, and we were thrilled when our name was called out."

The team's winning project was a fun-filled Glee-style competition for primary schools in Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch.

The competition culminated in a live final at St Mungo's Church, Cumbernauld, in May, with six local primary schools taking part.

The winning school was Lenzie Moss Primary, which won the chance to record a CD in a local recording studio.

The event raised more than £1400 for charity Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

Heather Urquhart, depute principal of Cumbernauld College, said: "We are thrilled that our students have been recognised amongst the best in the industry at the Scottish Events Awards.

"The show choir competition was a resounding success and everyone who took part had a great time.

"The college is proud of Samantha, Jonathan, Mark and Margaret."

The four are establishing JusTechnique as an events business and hope to take the competition around schools in other areas.
