Woman dies after being struck by van

AN elderly woman has died after being knocked down in a busy Glasgow street.

The 85-year-old was hit by an eastbound Ford Connect van while crossing Paisley Road West, near its junction with Bankfoot Road in Cardonald.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene at 10.10am yesterday.

The woman was taken to Southern General Hospital by ambulance after suffering a serious head injury.

She died a few hours later and relatives have been told.

Around eight police cars were on the scene and detectives investigating were seen measuring part of the road.

There was a wing mirror on the side of the road and the eastbound carriageway of Paisley Road West was closed to traffic for several hours.

Police said a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Sergeant Kenneth Robertson at the Road Policing Unit is appealing for witnesses.

He said: "I would appeal to anyone who was in the area shortly after 10am and saw the incident to come forward."

Anyone with information should call the Road Policing Unit on 0141 532 6400.
