RAIL services heading into Glasgow were badly disrupted today after a woman was killed when she was hit by a train.

The as-yet unnamed woman was struck by the 8.45am Glasgow Central to Largs service at Cardonald station.

Paramedics from the Scottish Ambulance Service were alerted. However, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

British Transport Police said the death is not suspicious.

The accident, which occurred at around 9am, led to disruption for rail passengers.

Replacement bus services had to be put on in both directions of the line between Paisley Gilmour Street and Glasgow Central stations.

These buses called at both Hillington East and West stations.

The accident did not affect rail services running between Glasgow Central and Paisley Canal and commuters found these trains on this route were running as normal.

A BTP spokesman said: "Inquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of the woman and inform her family."

Police said a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

A ScotRail spokesman said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused and have alternative transport in place where appropriate."

British Transport Police said the death is not suspicious.
