RESIDENTS in the East End will be able to explore the history of their area thanks to a new project.

Community organisations in Shettleston have been given £32,000 to develop a heritage trail to celebrate the area's past and present.

"Walking Back to the Future" will take people through the area, highlight-ing landmarks and build-ings of historical interest.

A leaflet or a smartphone app will be developed to guide them on the tour.

And now locals are being invited to say which places they want to be included, at the launch of the project on February 6 at Fuse Youth Cafe in Shettleston Road.

The cafe and Shettleston Housing Association are leading the project which it's hoped will forge a lasting legacy of 2014 and the Commonwealth Games. Many of the sporting extravaganza's key venues are in the East End.

Representatives of comm-unity history organisation, Northlight Heritage, which is coordinating the project, will be at the launch, along with the Shettleston Local History Group, to help residents explore the past.

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, it is hoped all sectors of the community will get involved, including primary school children and sheltered housing residents.

Workshops will be set up around themes such as employment, education, housing, sport and recrea-tion and social history.

Once a final route and landmarks have been agreed, leaflets and an app will be created for walkers to use on a journey through Shettleston's heritage.

During the two weeks of the Commonwealth Games the project team hopes to offer guided walks.

Gerry Baldwin, project manager at Fuse Youth Café, said: "Walking Back to the Future will be a true inter-generational project with older and younger members of the community working together and learning from each other.

"This is a great chance for Shettleston's young people to make a positive contrib-ution to their community."

Chris Cunningham, director of Shettleston Housing Association, said the association was pleased that the area would have a lasting legacy in the form of the heritage trail.

He said: "Our community has a lot to be proud of and we welcome the opportunity to tell everybody about it."

A spokesman from the Shettleston Local History Group said: "We are looking forward to Shettleston's untold stories being unear-thed and made known."

Two sessions will be held to launch the event, at 2.30pm and 6.30pm.
