I have recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It would help me if I understood what could have caused this.

The exact cause of bipolar disorder is unknown, but a mix of physical, environmental, and social factors are thought to be involved.

Bipolar disorder seems to run in families, with about 10-15% of the nearest relatives of people with the disorder also having the condition.

Although not caused by stress, stressful situations can trigger episodes of mania or depression in those with the condition. For example, physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, the breakdown of a relationship or the loss of a loved one can cause episodes of depression throughout a person's life. Also, physical illness can sometimes bring on periods of depression.

The majority of people can be treated using a combination of approaches.

My father has been diagnosed as a diabetic and I want to make sure he follows a healthier diet. Any advice?

l Diabetes is a long-term disease caused by too much glucose in the blood. This happens because there is not enough of the hormone insulin.

It is important to eat a healthy diet and control sugar intake. Diet advice can be had from your father's GP, specialist nurse, or dietician.

There is no need to buy special diabetic foods. He should eat normal foods in moderation, instead.

Your father should eat foods that are low in fat, sugar and salt, and high in fruit and vegetables.

A completely sugar-free diet is not needed, but cutting down on sugar is recommended. Where possible, choose low-sugar or reduced-sugar options and avoid drinks with added sugar, such as fizzy drinks and squashes.

If your father wants to or needs to lose weight, he should do it slowly, rather than crash dieting. He should also never skip meals because this can cause sugar levels to fall quickly.

What is...cerebal palsy?

THIS is a condition that affects posture, movement and coordination. It is caused by damage to the brain before, during or after birth. The part of the brain that is damaged is called the cerebrum, which is involved with the senses, voluntary movements of the muscles, and thinking and communication.

Symptoms

these can include speech problems, epilepsy, balance and co-ordination problems, hearing and sight difficulties and problems controlling movements, sitting upright and maintaining other positions.

Treatment

Much can be done to help children control muscular action and to prevent deformities, including physiotherapy, drugs, speech and language therapy.
