COMMONWEALTH Games Scotland recently announced the latest selection of emerging athletes who will benefit from the Achieve 2014 programme.

These promising young athletes are the first to be given first-hand knowledge and experience of a multi-sporting environment at Glasgow 2014.

The legacy goal is to assist them with their own preparations for medal success at future events, which may include the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa and St Lucia, 2017 and the next Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018.

Out of the selected athletes chosen for the Achieve 2014 programme, there are three promising para-swimmers.

One of them is Kayleigh Haggo, who competed in the Scottish Gas National Championships and British Para Swimming International Championships at Tollcross in April.

During the Achieve 2014 programme, Kayleigh will be mentored in her chosen sport and be given exclusive behind the scenes experience of the Commonwealth Games.

For her, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

She said: "I still cannot get over how much of an amazing opportunity this is and it will also be a great experience."

There is no doubt that Kayleigh is the one to watch out for in future.

She will inspire future generations on to sporting success.

In swimming, she has three Scottish records, a relay British record and recently won silver youth medal for backstroke at the British Para Swimming Internationals.

Last year, she was internationally classified for club throw - an athletic throwing event where the object is to throw a wooden club and is the Paralympic equivalent of the hammer throw - and she won a bronze medal at International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports senior World Games in the Netherlands.

Her sporting success doesn't end there.

She also has 13 RaceRunning world records along with a string of sporting awards.

However, for the immediate future, her focus is on para-swimming and club throw.

With Kayleigh's hopes to complete in future Paralympics, she, like me, is ready to welcome and embrace the ParaSports momentum when Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games gets under way.

She said: "I think it is fantastic that ParaSports have been included in the Commonwealth Games.

"It's a shame there are not more sports being showcased."

The ParaSports are being integrated into the mainstream medal table with 22 medal events across five ParaSports at the Common-wealth Games.

This is a significant way forward. It is also close to mainstreaming some sports for athletes with disabilities to participate and train at local level.

I hope the spectators will see the true spirit of these Paralympians and help pave the way to see more disabled athletes train in mainstream clubs.

This is a vision that is being echoed by Kayleigh as well.
