Founded in 1937, the Japanese firm has grown to become the world's biggest car maker.
2 General Motors: With its HQ in Detroit, it was famous for its 10 brand name cars, including Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac.
3 Volkswagen: Famous for the Beetle, the company is based in Saxony, Germany.
4 Hyundai: The South Korean group was founded in 1967 and has a subsidiary, Kia Motors.
5 Ford: Founded by Henry Ford in 1903, the US multinational also produces Lincoln brand cars.
6 Nissan: Based in Yokohama, Japan, it produces Nissan, Infiniti and Datsun brands.
7 Honda: Another Japanese company, it produces motorcycles as well as cars.
8 Peugeot-Citroen: Peugeot bought the bankrupt Citroen company in 1976 and have achieved success since then.
9 Suzuki: Better known for motor-cycles, the Japanese firm has also made a name with its 4x4s.
10 Renault: The French company has produced many racing cars as well as family vehicles.
