FEW organisations can lay a greater claim to be called a Glasgow institution than the St Andrew's Boxing Club.

For more than 40 years the club, under the stewardship of Tommy Gilmour, has launched and guided the careers of young fighters who have gone on to be champions of the world.

It is fair to say that Glasgow has over the years punched above its weight in producing several top fighters in the ring and much of that is down to the support generated by the club.

Ownership of the club may be changing hands, but the knowledge, experience and expertise of Tommy Gilmour is not being lost, which will help guide the new regime as it moves into a new era.

Boxing clubs in the city have been the saviour and the making of many a young man - for the talented and hard working it has helped provide a living and for the best, fame and riches.

As well as launching careers the club has raised considerable amounts of cash for charity.

The St Andrew's Boxing Club has been a success for the last four decades and hopefully that will continue for many more.

If the success of its predecessor is to be matched the club's new owners will need to be on their toes and keep their guard up at all times.
