Last week, an interview I did for STV Glasgow was aired. It was called My Life in Ten Pictures.

The invited guest shows 10 photos that represent important people or times in their lives. I had almost forgotten about it as I had filmed it many months ago. A 30 minute interview can be quite tough but I really enjoyed filming it. The guy who interviewed me, Paul Hughes, is also the channel editor. He and I had a good laugh that day. The selection ranged from me holding the hand of Saint Pope John-Paul in Rome to me hugging saintly socialist Tony Benn in Edinburgh. One of the 10 photos we talked about was of my wedding day and that was a good trigger to remind Tommy that it is our wedding anniversary tomorrow. He said he didn't need any reminding. The surprised look on his face told a different story. We were married on June 17, 15 years ago. Tommy says it seems like only 15 months. I feel like it has been 150 years!

Last week, 1100 people were recognised in the 2015 Queen's Birthday Honours list.

It's bad enough that these awards are dished out at New Year but here, it seems, is the summer list. Yet another bunch of MBEs, OBEs or Knighthoods.

I've always been of the opinion that it really is a load of absolute baloney! For the life of me, why actors, sports people or politicians are awarded is just a bloody nonsense

Ok, I accept that some recipients do deserve recognition for the extraordinary things they do to help others and the incredible courage and kindness they display. Such people are commonly referred to as 'ordinary folk,' but are usually anything but ordinary.

Charity workers, foster carers, child-carers, community heroes, scientists who slog hard to advance medicine and knowledge that save lives. I have no problem with them receiving recognition publicly I just think it should be a Parliamentary recognition not a Monarchical one. We are supposed to live in a modern democracy, not medieval times. Of course all of these people never expect to be given titles or in fact court any plaudits.

I had to laugh at this year's famous names like American actor Kevin Spacey who has been Knighted ….whit's that about?

Then there's Trade Union leader of the GMB, Paul Kenny, who is to be Knighted. He said on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme that "the Queen now recognises that Trade Unions have a great role to play in a modern society and she recognises the contribution that trade unionists make." Is he having a laugh?

He should have considered this story doing the rounds. Paul Flynn MP, as a member of the Public Administration Select Committee, has been scrutinising the Honour's List process and has asked the Government to release the names of those who have turned down an honour, of which there are many. He said that they should be dubbed 'HRH' which he says would stand for 'Has Rejected Honours' as that would be the highest honour of all.

When all is said and done I reckon our very own Rabbie Burns summed it up perfectly;

"Gie fools their silks and knaves their wine. A man's a man for a' that. For a' that and a' that. Their tinsel show and a' that. The honest man tho' e'er sae poor. Is king o' men for a' that."

I have been invited on to the Kaye Adams show on Radio Scotland from 10.20am today to discuss what it is like to be part of a 'political half' on the back of the Michelle Obama visit to London. Tune in if you can.
